Top Games Studios
Top Game Studios

The Develop 100 list has been around for awhile now and as well as letting us know which games studios are raking in the cash, It also gives us a bit of an idea which strategies are working best for game developers. The argument about new IP’s or running old ones into the ground or ‘fully exploiting them’ as CEO of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick so delicately put it, is one that has been gaining momentum recently so it is interesting to see how it is reflected in the list. It is also interesting to see which studio have made their success on the back of top PS3 games, if any.
1. Blizzard Entertainment USA: Did you know that WoW players complete 16 million quests every single day? Quite amazing really. Anyway, Blizzard is sitting up here at the top of the list due almost entirely to the success of its phenomenal MMORPG, which bring in 100 million USD every month in subscriptions alone.
2. Nintendo EAD: Amazing fact number two Nintendo would have occupied this lofty second place even if they had not released a single game this year due to the strength of their back catalogue for the DS. The most successful game on Wii were Mario Kart and Wii Fit.
3. Rockstar North: Only one game release was needed to put Rockstar up here and no chocolate frogs for guessing which one it was. The success of GTA as a franchise is beyond compare and the arrival of GTA IV in 2008 was enough to catapult Rockstar into third.
4. EA Canada owes it success to more than one title it has to be said, but Fifa 09 probably deserves a lot of the praise for this position. Which does have a little irony too it as Canada is hardly re knowned for its world beating soccer teams. If it is any consolation the guy responsible for the success of the top ps3 version and the xbox 360 title is a Brit. Good to see any Electronic Arts studio in the top five because EA’s attitude to new IP’s has been very praise worthy of late.
5. Capcom is , however, the biggest winner in terms of new a IP this year with Monster Hunt which has had almost awe inspiring success on the Japanese market. This IP is only five years old. Of course some of their old favourites such as Resident Evil have also stood them in very good stead. We can only hope that Mr Kotick is watching. He who dares wins, Bobby boy.
That is a nutshell run down, if you are someone who likes to know all the facts then I suggest you follow this link and find out about all 100 of the top studios. There are an awful lot of top PS3 games propping up these studios.
